Lunch at Eastern Standard (Boston, MA)

[Translate] What I’ve heard about Eastern Standard/a> is the good cocktails and it is close to Fenway Park. Though I’m not a baseball fan, it’s fun to see the diners and locals (some wearing the Red Sox’s jerseys) hanging out at the large bar before the opening day game taking in the excitement. This decade-old restaurant is a big, bustling brasserie that isn’t overdone or self-conscious. On one side is the dining room, with burgundy banquettes and white tablecloths crowded with thick, red-rimmed china platters filled with food. On the other is a large bar, a length of white marble..

Smoke Shop BBQ (Cambridge, MA)

[Translate] One of the few late night places (as in, open past 11:00 PM) – and not many restaurants open late I’ve come to realize – in the Boston area to have good barbecue is Smoke Shop BBQ. Chef/owner Andy Husbands is a man serious about his ‘cue given the fact he’s on the competition circuit and won several accolades over the years. (more…)

Dinner at Clown Bar (Paris, France)

[Translate] For the hip and buzzy restaurants in Paris, Clown Bar is one of them. I’ve read and heard from a wide range of various bloggers, respected food websites, and food magazines that this place is the place to eat. The kitchen is led by a Japanese chef Atsumi Sota which explains the Asian touches on the menu while grounded on French cuisine. The Belle Époque décor is present but not over the top but there’s a distinctive hipster feel to it. The dark wood tables at the front of the restaurant were in close proximity to each other (if..

Dinner at Chambar (Vancouver, B.C., Canada)

[Translate] Chambar a huge, gorgeous, casual fine dining restaurant in Vancouver. The dining area has the brick walls, wooden beams and vaulted ceilings, and wood and black leather tufted banquettes, strong and masculine, balanced by colorful floating light fixtures. The atmosphere is definitely lively and it sets up for a fun meal. The menu reads international cuisine. Chambar draws influences from various cultures while sticking to flavors they are familiar with. The menu is seasonal and culturally influenced while incorporating a little farm to table. We started with unique cocktails like the Beety Street (a not too bitter with a..

All About the Hairy Crab at Wang Bao He Restaurant (王宝和酒家) in Shanghai, China

[Translate] One of our most expensive dinners while we were in China was at Wang Bao He Restaurant (王宝和酒家) in Shanghai. What makes the place expensive? They specialize in the coveted hairy crabs (大閘蟹) ever since the Qing Dynasty (around 1640s) and they are primarily shrimp. Hairy crabs are a seasonal delicacy only found in Asia. The small window of time when the female crabs produce the coveted roe (during the 9th and 10th months of the lunar year, meaning during the autumn season). We ordered a feast just all about this delicious crab, from whole steamed hairy crab (our..

Entering this minimalist decor dining room is a mix of Industrial (open steel racks containing glass jars of colorful candies and..

Dinner at Plan B Restaurant – A Creative Tapas Restaurant in Nolita

[Translate] Plan B signage and interior Plan B restaurant is an eccentric, tongue-in-cheek kind of tapas restaurant that sticks out from other tapas restaurants. Some menu items are familiar but have a certain twist the makes it different (like their take on a Cubano sandwich) and some are offal cuts that not many restaurants would think of selling (e.g. bulls testicles, which I’ll explain that experience later). All of these foods are cooked under the helm of Roberto Hanechak. The interior looks like an edgy skateboard park landscape of urban Bilbao and Barcelona. Graffiti art brightens one wall, banquettes are..
