Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits (Chicago, IL)

Our spread

I love desserts in many forms but pie is special because it can be either sweet or savory and typically encased in a flaky pastry. I was craving American Southern style comfort food and we’ve come to love Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits.

It’s a cozy space that serves and specializes pie and biscuits in a setting of a neighborhood coffee shop with a cool antique chandelier.

Our row of pies
Buffalo style Chicken pot pie, blue cheese topping and house hot sauce

On the pie spectrum of the menu, they serve both sweet and savory — and it’s great that it’s tightly edited so you won’t be bogged down with too many options. The six sweet pies offered when we were there are key lime, maple bourbon pecan, coconut cream, orange almond crunch, The Chocolate and apple cherry. All of these pies are made with high quality ingredients and they were fantastic in its own way. The custard-based cream pies were texturally on point. Not too firm and not too “wet” and it’s just sweet enough. The pecan pie was studded with a lot of pecans. All but the apple cherry pies were topped with a mound of fluffy, fresh whipped cream.

For the savory options, there’s pot pie. Our Buffalo chicken pot pie was amazing. The filling is a classic chicken pot pie filling but the top crust is heavily drenched in a housemade vinegar-based hot sauce and a tangy blue cheese. The flavors nails it on the head.

Maple glazed ham, dijon chive butter and biscuit
Ginger sage sausage patty, cheddar cheese, seasonal blueberry jam biscuit

The biscuits here are indeed delicious. Beautifully golden brown and craggy topped and when you break apart the biscuit, it flakes in layers indicating there’s lots of wonderful butter were mixed in there. The biscuits can be sandwiched in various savory options like maple glazed ham with Dijon chive butter or housemade ginger sage sausage patty with melted cheddar and a smear of blueberry jam on the side of the plate.

Farmer salsd - Arugula, pomegranate, walnuts, sliced apple, Champagne vinaigrette
Candied bacon

For a slight change of pace, we did have the farmer salad without the biscuit and the salad is a good refresher from all of this heavy food. The side of candied bacon was a great snack, if will. Nice amount of crispness and a good balance of sweet, salty and smoky.

If you’re ever in Chicago, this place is a must. It’s a great place to hangout and get a feel of Chicago without the craziness of the downtown Chicago (in other words, less tourists).
