Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits (Chicago, IL)

I love desserts in many forms but pie is special because it can be either sweet or savory and typically encased in a flaky pastry. I was craving American Southern style comfort food and we’ve come to love Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits. It’s a cozy space that serves and specializes pie and biscuits in a setting of a neighborhood coffee shop with a cool antique chandelier. (more…)

Brunch at Talula’s Garden (Philadelphia, PA)

Entry to Talula’s Garden, the main dining room and outdoor dining space On a recent blisteringly hot Sunday afternoon, we headed over to Talula’s Garden for brunch. We’re quite taken by the unusual entrance to the restaurant as you’ll first encounter the beautiful outdoor terrace dining space where several brave souls dining their way through this heat. We seek shelter from the brutal heat and was welcomed by the spacious dining space that feels almost felt like we’re in an upscale French country home with its center room having Alice Waters’ quote “A garden brings life and beauty to the..

Sugar and Plumm, Upper West Side

Sugr and Plumm: Exterior, retail counter, dining room Sugar and Plumm is the newest addition to the dining scene on the Upper West Side. Sugar and Plumm’s flagship location in Paramus, NJ expanded to this Manhattan location looking like a sophisticated, polished kind of Candyland with the general color scheme of lavender purple, cream, and touches of polished silver. When you step foot through the door of this bakery, gelateria, and restaurant, you’re welcomed with literally eye candy. Piles of cookies, muffins, and croissants on a display case near the register, along with the ice cream and sorbets, chocolates and..

Dinner at Ken and Cook – A Good Neighborhood Restaurant

A few nights ago, I had a solid dinner at Ken and Cook. Co-owner and chef Richard Diamonte was at the kitchen that humid evening. Exterior (at night), looking out on Kenmare from the bar, and part of the interior, the bar Ken and Cook’s ambiance is what I would call an American brassiere type of restaurant. Pressed tin walls, white painted brick walls, touches of brass, and leather banquette booths on one side of the restaurant. The bar is found toward the back of the restaurant. Familiar and not too trendy. This also reflects on the menu. The menu..

Dinner at Highpoint Bistro & Bar

Menu & Interior A few nights ago I had dinner at Highpoint Bistro & Bar with a friend since we’re in the neighborhood and it was a drizzly evening. We were greeted warmly by our waiter, Michael and was immediately seated. Cocktails: Blood Orange Old Fashion topped with brandied cherries & Pomegranate Martini For drinks, we ordered blood orange old fashion ($12) topped with brandied cherries and a pomegranate martini ($12). The old fashioned was very delicious and balanced flavors with a nice kick from the Makers Mark. The dangerously good brandied cherries on top were too easy to snack..

Dinner at The Meatball Factory

Meatball Factory (exterior), At the bar, Menu A few nights ago I had dinner at The Meatball Factory with a friend. When I heard that this particular restaurant opened a couple of months ago, I initially dismissed it as another meatball restaurant who is chasing the popularity of its antecedent. I don’t normally really crave meatballs but the bone-freezing, windy evening that it was and my friend and I were in the neighborhood, we gave it a try. Top to bottom: The spread, Turducken meatballs, ‘Cluck, Cluck’ meatballs & Sauce samplers We ended up ordering a huge amount since we’re..

Jo's Restaurant (Closed)

This will be my last post until I come back from my vacation to Paris in early June, as I’m leaving New York City on Monday. Over the extent of that time, please look at my Flickr just to see touristy photos as well as food porn. Jo’s exterior and window My family and I wanted to celebrate my brother’s graduation from graduate school (he earned a MBA in Accounting and now a newly minted, qualified CPA, as he told me this morning) and ended up going to Jo’s in Nolita. We desired to have a casual dinner amongst us..
