Dalloyau, a prestigious French culinary brand with a rich royal heritage and a 300-year legacy, is the only maison de gastronomy to serve the royal court of Louis XIV since 1682.
This location in Harbour City, Kowloon comprises of a boutique, café, French fine dining restaurant, and terrace (opened in July 2014), Dalloyau Hong Kong is a four-in-one experience.
Designed by award-winning international design firm Yabu Pushelberg, the space is divided into four distinct areas, each with their own theme. La Boutique Dalloyau is dominated by white marble and gold, highlighting selections of treats including the finest patisseries and sweets, such as Opéra, Saint-Honoré and Religieuse. At Le Café Dalloyau, there is a more relaxed atmosphere where diners can enjoy a light lunch, afternoon tea, and drinks, with a hand-painted mural of flowers and honeybees being the main focus of the space.
Épure, the brand’s French fine dining establishment, features a fumed-oak rose-patterned ceiling and custom furnishings, with murals of forest scenes adorning the walls. We dined in this room since there’s no more tables at Le Café. This worked out perfectly fine for us since we could enjoy the lovely space all to ourselves without the having to hear the chatter.
Since it was still sweltering when we were in Hong Kong, we ordered some cold, fresh pressed juices (orange and carrot $70 HKD each and my “daily mix” of carrot apple $95 HKD) to cool ourselves down besides having afternoon tea and having pots of Ceylon Orange Pekoe. Our juices were refreshing and nicely chilled. The tea was balanced, brisk flavor and a mellow sweetness.
Our afternoon tea spread (the tier and tea is $536 HKD for 2 persons and our additions of La Collection $168 HKD, includes a pastry and two macarons) was beautiful and lavish.
The tier is decked with beautiful savory tea sandwiches that were actually very delicious, almost out shined the pastries. Most notable of the four different sandwiches was the lobster, black truffle, tomato and basil. Bold flavors yet the lobster is still the star of the sandwich.
On the sweets tier, it did have the signature Opera cakes and it matched is reputation. The chocolate cake was deeply cocoa and moist and the intense coffee buttercream was amazing. The miniature parfaits of diced poached pear, pear mousse, and gingerbread was a welcoming autumn inspired dessert.
On our plates of individual pastries, the macarons (we had Cognac and Earl Grey) were very good; not too sweet and good flavor. Religeuse Exotique was delightful. The choux pastry was still fresh and the passion fruit pastry cream was vibrantly tart. The raspberry Tendresse cake is wonderful. It is an almond biscuit base filled with a delicate whipped cream flavored with wild strawberries and raspberries topped with meringue.
The Croquante Pistache is a refreshing cake made of biscuit madeleine, pistachio cremeux, vanilla cream, topped with fresh grapefruit. The Doucer Exotique is a creamy yet structured mousse cake, composed of vanilla mousse, passion fruit and banana cremeux, passion fruit glaze on a shortbread base. The latter was a good cake but it didn’t swoon us as much as the croquante or religeuse.
The scones (plain and orange zest) came in after we were done with our tier to ensure it’s warm. The scones are warm and tasted good but it’s quite dense.
Overall, we did enjoy our afternoon tea and pastries at Dalloyau. We truly loved the savory tea sandwiches (and would like to have more). The Opera cake was the favorite as well as the passion fruit religeuse. Service was professional and friendly.
