Recently we had a solid Mexican taco dinner at ChicoJulio in the Upper West Side.
Once you step through the doors, it opens to an airy space with a handsome stocked with flights of mezcal, bacanora and pechuga (a Mexican liquor distilled using a chicken). As great as this was, we’re here for the food and here’s what we started with:
The classic ceviche ($8) was nicely done. Bright and refreshing with fresh seafood and creamy avocado to balance. The queso fundido with chorizo ($7) is a must if you love ooey gooey cheese with bits of rendered paprika spiced sausage. Shrimp and chips ($17) were fine. The shrimp was large and seasoned nicely but the coating was on the thick side. The fries had a delectable crisp exterior. The frozen mango margarita ($10) was a great cocktail to wash this all down.
As I’ve stated earlier, you should order the tacos (they are sold in sets of three or four tacos per filling). All are on warm, soft tacos (flour or corn) and the fillings are all balanced well and delicious. We had the Taco el Jinete (trio for $15), a skirt steak taco topped with pico de gallo, scallion, salsa verde on corn tortilla. Flavorful, tender skirt steak and the condiments worked wonderfully. The Taco Capedo (trio for $12) was fried fish tacos topped with red cabbage, pico de gallo, and yogurt cucumber dill salsa on corn tortilla. These fish tacos were delectable. The fish was moist and the batter shell was still crisp. The crunchy cabbage and the yogurt sauce made this taco pretty great.
In all, ChicoJulio is a very good place for tacos and margaritas, especially around the Upper West Side. The waitstaff is friendly and we have enjoyed this meal.
