Federal Donuts is arguably one of the hot spots for donuts and fried chicken in Philly. It’s owned by Chef Michael Solomonov, the same person who runs Zahav (which I unfortunately didn’t have the time to eat there).
Prepping for their fried chicken
We visited this famed donut at their Center City location as it’s the closest to our hotel and had an planned for an early morning breakfast of the said donuts.
Unfortunately, the famed spiced fried chicken wasn’t available for sale since it’s 7 AM and they refused to sell the chicken until 11 AM. (If you read The New York Times Magazine’s profile of the spice wizard, Lior Lev Sercarz who make Federal Donuts’ spice blend for the fried chicken.)
Despite of being turned down for fried chicken, we still wanted their donuts. We opted for their hot and fresh strawberry-lavender donut ($1.25) and it was literally hot and fresh from their fryer that my tongue singed just a touch from it being so hot. The pain was worth it as it’s not too sweet and the flavors of sugar it’s rolled in shown well.
I did buy a box of half a dozen fancy glazed donuts ($12), which entailed to one of each flavor they had for that day – strawberry-ginger, cookies & cream, banana cream pie, sticky bun, Lucky Peach (it is named after Momofuku, in case you’re wondering), and peanut butter and chocolate.
Our least favorite was the sticky bun since it lacked much flavoring besides the brown sugar. We did like the robustly flavored, strawberry-ginger the most and the Lucky Peach coming in the next best flavor. Others were good but not as favored.
