Skylounge at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Amsterdam Centraal Station is a stylish lounge bar and restaurant with a rooftop terrace with panoramic views of most of the city from the city center to the IJ waterfront indoors and outside. It’s a popular place for locals and tourists alike not just because of the views – the food and drinks served here are very solid.
My friends and I arrived there just at on time for sunset (and lucked out when it was cloudy all day) and started with photogenic, fruity drinks and one of us requested a bitter Campari cocktail. Our bartender was cool to let us give him some idea what we drink despite not wanting the typical drinks (martini, daiquiri, etc.) and created these colorful cocktails. After receiving our drinks, we stepped outside to the terrace and taking in the glorious views. I can’t help but feel inspired by this cool, laid back city.
We ordered a few bites to go with our drinks – oysters on the half shell and bitterballen. The oysters were wonderfully briny that a squeeze of lemon is more than enough to season the mollusk.
Bitterballen is a classic, deep fried, savory Dutch snack containing a mixture of beef, beef broth, butter, flour for thickening, parsley, salt and pepper, resulting in a thick roux. The bitterballen were deliciously crisp on the outside and the inside is creamy and meaty. (For someone who is having this for the first time, I understand its appeal easily serving this at a dinner party at home and guests devouring them.) Though it would be easy for us to have a meal here, we headed out for our dinner reservation downtown parting from this stunning place.
