Lobby of Le Méridien; Interior of 789 Nanjing Lu Bar + Lounge 66th Floor; The view from our room on the lounge’s 66th Floor
Le Royal Méridien’s 789 Bar is another great spot to enjoy cocktails and a wide selection of Champagne. What makes this hotel bar stand out from others is the 360-degree uninterrupted views of Shanghai since the hotel is the tallest in Puxi and bar takes up the 65th and 66th floors.
On the lower level, plush crimson armchairs gathered in intimate clusters encourage quiet conversation. Live music, original modern artwork and soft lighting underscore the relaxed mood. The upper level features a modern dance floor and a live DJ who spins the latest mix of contemporary music—inviting you to dance the night away. (The DJ spins out tunes from Tuesday to Thursday nights.) But mind you, this is not the irritatingly loud club.
We reserved a private room up on the 66th floor with the best almost aerial view of the iconic Shanghai skyline.
Our spread of Shanghainese snacks; Bitten shengjian bao and pan fried dumpling
We ordered a spread of delicious Shanghainese snacks of soup dumplings, pan fried taro cakes, shengjian baos and pan fried dumplings. These are created the hotel’s chef Peter Cheung who is from Hong Kong and his team. These were executed wonderfully and we tasted the nuances of his background in his food, namely by the way his seasonings are (and that is not a bad thing). The soup dumplings were delicately textured yet filled with that signature scalding hot soup. The shengjian baos and pan fried dumplings were excellently done with a not too thick skin and flavorful pork filling. The pan fried taro cakes had a crispy exterior and not too dense.
We went along with our server’s suggestion of us ladies having the fruity but pleasantly sweet cocktails of Sex on the beach, while the men have a balanced but fruit forward whiskey sour that was mildly sweet and balanced.
We finished off our food portion of the (late) evening with a fresh fruit platter of mangoes, dragon fruit, watermelon, pineapple and oranges. All were deliciously sweet, especially the dragon fruit that had floral nuances.
We ended the night with Champagne cocktails to toast Shanghai for an amazing first leg of our vacation in China. (Our flight to our next city was the following afternoon.)
789 Nanjing Lu Bar + Lounge was a great place for lively (or private, for us) conversation, fantastic view of Shanghai, good drinks, and the service was fantastic.
