Very Good Stay at Oriental Residence Bangkok

Lovely seating area at the lobby
Inside my one bedroom suite with a kitchen

My friends and I made it to Bangkok and the first hotel we stayed in was at Oriental Residence Bangkok. This boutique hotel and residence is located in the very heart of downtown Bangkok, right next to the U.S. Embassy, the Oriental Residence brims with quiet, understated luxury for business and leisure travelers.

The modern luxury at the Oriental Residence, a pleasant space to linger for a little. The spacious lobby, complete with chandelier is very quiet except on mornings where everyone is going in and out for breakfast at Cafe Claire or out and about to explore the city or en route to the airport. The common areas and rooms are bright and highly functional.

The state of the art bedroom (we stayed at a one-bedroom suite) kept in white and grey tones with hardwood and marble floors, are functional, elegant, bright and in excellent condition. The bed was enormous and there is a pillow menu for one to choose the filling material and firmness for a great night’s sleep.

The room sport a small kitchen alcove – there are quite a few long-term guests staying here due to the proximity to several nearby embassies – as well as large, spotless bathroom with a tub and separate shower.

We did hang out at the attractive pool on the 4th floor with wonderful views of downtown Bangkok during one lazy afternoon. I would have gone to the gym for a workout but it was closed for renovations.

Tuna tartare with avocado
Sole Meunière
Boeuf Angus Australien Rossini - Australian Angus beef tenderloin Rossini with truffle sauce “Perigeux” style and mashed potatoes

We dined at Cafe Claire for dinner and it’s a very good restaurant that focuses on French bistro fare but utilizes ingredients that are organically raised, locally sourced, if ever so possible. This is not the place where you’d have a romantic dinner but the food is very good. The tuna tartare with avocado was solid. The sole meunière was delightful especially the jasmine rice with chives. The Australian Angus beef tenderloin rossini with truffle sauce “Perigeux” style and mashed potatoes was cooked very nicely and the beef was so tender and there was a small lobe of foie gras on top of that beef to accentuate the decadence of the dish.

Cafe Claire also serves an international breakfast buffet that was included in our room (you have the option not to include the breakfast) and it caught me by surprise how delicious it was! I tend to experience lackluster hotel breakfasts when I travel so with that in mind, I didn’t anticipate how good the quality of the food was at Cafe Claire. We did realize during our few nights’ stay, they change some dishes to make it interesting like one morning they would serve a roast, stuffed pork leg with sausage and replace it with roast beef the next morning or had a sublime Cantonese-style steamed fish with garlic and black bean sauce and replace it with a fried fish dish instead. We truly adore the local, fresh fruit and juice bar since you can’t beat fresh fruits in Thailand.

Their made to order egg dishes were solid but if you had to choose one, the best is the two eggs cooked any way you prefer (mine was fried, over easy) that comes with a chicken sausage and a strip of crisp bacon and asparagus. If you had the eggs cooked as mentioned, you’d experience how good and fresh these eggs were.

We enjoyed our stay a lot here. The bedroom suite was spacious and the kitchen outfitted with a fairly large refrigerator was very useful. The staff was helpful and friendly and every night’s sleep was very comfortable and quiet. The food at Cafe Claire was very good so it’s an option if you’d want to stay in.
