At the USTA Tennis Center in Flushing, NY; Assortment of Grey Goose cocktails and Moët & Chandon Champagnes; Chefs Tony Mantuano, David Burke, Masaharu Morimoto, Jim Abbey and Elizabeth Karmel participating in providing their food to the various restaurants and food areas of the US Open
This is my third year covering and tasting what the U.S. Open will be serving at their food courts and restaurants. Not a huge amount changed for the past two years (see: 2012 and 2011) that I’ve seen and ate.
Chef Morimoto’s ginormous sushi platter; David Burke’s NY Minute Steak Salad and Grilled Portabello burger; Gluten-free options and smoothies
Chef Masaharu Morimoto will still continue to serve his elegant sushi at Aces Restaurant. David Burke will serve upscale New American dishes like his New York minute steak at Champions Bar & Grill. Tony Mantuano will serve Mediterranean fare and his newest dish will be the antipasti dish along with his ouzo shrimp.
The newest chef on board will be Elizabeth Karmel of Hill Country BBQ & Hill Country Chicken, as her delicious barbecue (like smoked brisket and chopped brisket slathered in peach-chipotle barbecue sauce on a potato roll) and individual size pies will be sold at the Food Village. Other new additions are gluten-free options to the tennis players and attendees watching the games.
Instead of giving you my tasting notes of the many dishes I’ve eaten, here’s a couple of my favorites with captions.
Chef Morimoto’s sushi can never be beat.
Chef Karmel’s tasting plate of pecan pie, chopped brisket slathered in peach-chipotle barbecue sauce on a potato roll, and smoked brisket was delectable. My favorite parts were the pie and the smoked brisket.
The grilled steak sandwich was amazing, especially the marbling of fat in that particular piece I had.
I adored this chicken kale salad that had truly vibrant flavors and great textures for a salad that I don’t mind eating a large plate of this.
Though it’s not food but I liked having brut, fruity with hints of biscuit glasses of Moët & Chandon at their outdoor terrace bar. In spite of the rain, the Champagne made it tolerable to be slightly wet in my green, floral print silk Etro dress and pumps.
