Lunch at Donatella (NYC)

Executive Chef Jarett Appell at the blinged-out pizza oven & the restaurant’s interior This past Thursday, I had a delicious lunch at Donatella in Chelsea, New York with a group of friends. This is a casual Italian restaurant owned the well-known restaurateur and television personality, Donatella Arpaia. You probably might have heard of the famous blinged-out oven (as seen on Slice) that looks like a gold disco ball but it’s functional and built by Napoli’s best oven-crafters, Stefano Ferrara. Her executive chef Jarett Appell is creating delicious food and excellent Neapolitan-style pizzas that would make a pizza purist and others..

Dinner at Highpoint Bistro & Bar

Menu & Interior A few nights ago I had dinner at Highpoint Bistro & Bar with a friend since we’re in the neighborhood and it was a drizzly evening. We were greeted warmly by our waiter, Michael and was immediately seated. Cocktails: Blood Orange Old Fashion topped with brandied cherries & Pomegranate Martini For drinks, we ordered blood orange old fashion ($12) topped with brandied cherries and a pomegranate martini ($12). The old fashioned was very delicious and balanced flavors with a nice kick from the Makers Mark. The dangerously good brandied cherries on top were too easy to snack..

StarChefs Rising Stars Gala 2011

At Bar Basque, Murgo 2007 Brut Rosé for VIP reception, and the lavish table display at Bar Basque This year’s StarChefs Rising Stars Gala 2011 took place at Bar Basque. (If you do recall, last year was at Maritime Parc in Liberty State, New Jersey.) Much closer to home and it’s a really nice sheltered outdoor space to be at that beautiful evening. The honored chefs, mixologists and sommeliers came out this evening to cook their best dish and for a few, pair the food with great cocktails, wines and sakes. This Year’s Rising Stars If you’re inquiring who are..

Matsuri Restaurant: Preview of the Seven Deadly Sins Menu

Matsuri: At the bar, my yuzu cosmopolitan, and the dining room Matsuri is a Japanese restaurant located at The Maritime Hotel in Chelsea, under the helm of Chef Tadashi Ono. I do like Chef Ono’s style of traditional Japanese cooking, as I do cook out of his book The Japanese Grill, co-written with Harris Salat. I was invited to a preview tasting dinner of the restaurant’s Seven Deadly Sins menu debuting in October. Of the alcoholic drinks I’ve tried, their yuzu cosmopolitan was actually good. Generally, I’m not a fan of cosmos because they’re too cloyingly sweet but the use..

Tasting the Summer Menu at Bar Basque

Bar Basque sign at the window, Interiors, Bar portion of the patio, looking out at FoodParc, Covered patio dining space Bar Basque located at the second floor of the Eventi Hotel opened the past fall. Many newspapers and bloggers noted of it’s futuristic, Tron-like space, as it was designed by Blade Runner‘s Syd Mead. Everything is basically red with touches of black, white, and chrome. Streamlined space that has a bar, an outdoor patio for the people who want a drink, a covered terrace for al freso dining, and an open kitchen in the back. I came here, with a..

Part of the Top 10 Pastry Chefs in the U.S. along with Hall Of Fame honoree, Jacquy Pfeiffe Last night was a sugar, chocolate, butter, and cream-filled evening of all things pastry, as Dessert Professional magazine picked the Top 10 Pastry Chefs in America 2011. It’s an industry event where press, chocolate companies, restauranteurs, and pastry chefs meet at the ICE (Institute of Culinary Education) to taste the top 10 chefs’ sweet offerings. Four of them are found within the NYC area, the other six are out in the West Coast. Here are the Top 10 Chefs of 2011: (more…)

Carnivorous Dinner: The Metzgete at Trestle on Tenth

Trestle on Tenth: Exterior and Interior, The Metzgete on the menu For the past few years, I’ve heard of Trestle on Tenth and placed it on my (long) list of places I want/should eat in New York City. Finally, I made a dinner date with my mom this past Thursday because of the Metzgete that runs every night through this Saturday, January 22, 2011. The Metzgete is basically a meat-centric platter (can be done either family-style or individually) that costs $26 per person. I’ll get in depth with this later and yes, my mother and I love to eat meat...

NTDTV's 3rd Annual Chinese Cooking Competition & Banquet

Getting invited to see and taste this year’s NTDTV’s 3rd Annual Cooking Competition at Times Square’s Duffy Square was quite an interesting and admittedly, unconventional spot to host an event like this. I would never imagine having an outdoor cooking competition smack in the middle of the busiest, tourist-filled area. But they’ve built platforms, a stage, four kitchens (that look like this), and several tables for VIPs and press. Cameras were everywhere and yes, the food smelled amazing as the 23 chefs from Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and the United States were duking it out with the dishes..
