This past Mother’s Day, I took my mom and the rest of my family to Ristorante Morini. We planned to go to the Metropolitan Museum and see the new China: Through the Looking Glass exhibition. This exhibition is worth your time. To view the gorgeous, sumptuous gowns and the various ancient Chinese objet d’art that was once a household or personal item. It is a very visual, stimulating exhibition and it does inform the lay viewer how Chinese art inspires the Western fashion designers. Going back to the food, Ristorante Morini is a few blocks away from the Met, which..

The modern American restaurant Greenwich Project is helmed by Picholine alum Carmine Di Giovanni, Greenwich strives to blend a high-concept bar scene with equally ambitious food. The restaurant is warmly-lit, romantic townhouse setting. The polished ground floor gleams in red brick and white tile, burnt-orange banquettes and timbered ceiling. The bar was bustling from the after-work crowd. We started our dinner with really great, potent cocktails ($14 each) Kentucky Dynasty (left) and Rye, Roots & Roses (right). The Kentucky Dynasty was a smoky bourbon based cocktail with Cocchi Bianco and Lapsang Souchong tea and the Rye, Roots & Roses was..
Wales Millennium Centre & Exterior of Ffresh Bar When I was in Cardiff, Wales, UK, one of my stops in this cool city was at the Millennium Centre, right off of Cardiff Bay. Before we had a tour of this fantastic performing arts center, we had a quick but very tasty lunch at Ffresh Bar. This restaurant is recommended in the Michelin Guide 2015 and Good Food Guide, with menus designed by the consultant chef Sean Hill of the Walnut Tree Abergavenny. (more…)
Exterior, interior, and architectural details of Chapel 1877 I recently went to a press trip to South Wales and had an amazing time. While I will write an appropriate introductory piece about the great city of Cardiff in the next post, I’m going straight to one of my dinners at Chapel 1877. Chapel 1877 is a buzzy restaurant in Cardiff, Wales that opened in 2008. It was former Pembroke Terrace Chapel and it’s respectfully restored the church’s beautiful French Gothic architectural details (it’s a Grade II listed building). The restaurant is divided into three spaces, a bar dining area, main..
The Milton is an Irish accented restaurant that opened in October 2014. It’s a gastro pub style restaurant that came to fruition by Tomas Maher, of VIP Room, and Chef David Diaz, formerly of Brasserie Beaumarchais. This restaurant is not pretentious and it accommodates a range of people, from the dating couples to young families. We went out to dinner that evening since we’ve been museum hopping on Museum Mile. We started off strong with fantastic cocktails ($11 each) of The Milton Sour, a riff of one of my favorite drinks, the Pisco Sour but gin based, and Taking the..
For someone who does not live in Brooklyn, it takes a certain restaurant for me to haul my fanny and make a trek past Williamsburg or Dumbo. (To those who are not familiar with NYC geography, both neighborhoods are the first subway stops in Brooklyn.) However, I did make it far into Clinton Hill for Emily. Why? The food is great. Despite the fact it’s a pizza-forward restaurant, they do create some very good small plates and an insanely great burger. (The latter I will get to soon.) The style of pizza is essentially the New York-Neapolitan. It’s thin like..
Our other Peking duck-centered dinner (and it was our last meal in China) was at Made in China at the Grand Hyatt Beijing (where we stayed while in Beijing but more on that in a near future post). We arrived to dinner at 7 PM with a reservation for a table and the Peking duck. (You must reserve a duck ahead of time or you’ll never have one that evening.) The dark wood and steel eatery; floor-to-ceiling shelves stocked with Chinese knickknacks and a stylishly exposed kitchen behind glass set the atmosphere inside this 126-seat glitzy space. Dumplings and stir-fry..
Dining room at Nougatine & Menus Another great upscale dinner we had at Shanghai was at Jean Georges Vongerichten’s restaurant, Nougatine at Three on the Bund. I ate at Jean Georges Restaurant and Nougatine in New York City but I was curious how it fared out on the other side of the globe. Three on the Bund is Shanghai’s newest epicurean lifestyle destination blending gastronomy, art, culture, and music in an elegant, sophisticated gathering place for dynamic people and stimulating ideas. It created and manages six award-winning restaurants and bars, The Cupola, and Shanghai Gallery of Art. It is also..
Exterior and part of the interior of Boulud Sud This past Labor Day weekend, I had brunch with my girl friends at Boulud Sud. As you might know, I am a fan of this restaurant when lunch with my mother and my friends are familiar with the Boulud brand but ate at this particular restaurant for the first time. Heck, even one of them lives close by one particular dessert (I’ll inform you soon which) convert her here to be a regular. Large format spicy Moroccan hummus, hummus, taramosalata, babaganoush and various flatbreads and dill potato chips for our table..
