Chinese New Year Dinner 2014 – Traditional Dishes & Spice and Herb Salt Crust Duck

Happy New Year! Good luck in the Year of the Horse! 恭喜發財! 馬年行大運! My family and I ended up serving a mix of traditions, so to speak, for our new year dinner. The dessert you see above, is a rich and delectable macadamia shortbread brownie. The buttery, delicately crisp shortbread just melds with the fudgy brownie perfectly that if I left my weight consciousness at the door, I would have eaten the entire batch by myself. Of course, we did make and ate the simple traditional sweet of nian gao (my recipe). Chewy and tasty, and symbolically give us a..

Whole Tea Smoked Duck Recipe

I recently received an incredible package of local, humanely raised duck products (whole duck with its head and feet intact and duck breasts) from Crescent Duck*, located in Long Island, NY. Crescent Duck Farm grows only premium Genuine Long Island ducklings. What is particularly great about Crescent Duck Farm is it’s a family owned farm since 1908. The birds are fed only natural grains without hormones or artificial growth stimulants. What I’m really excited is the fact I get to cook with the Chinese style whole duck since type of duck is pretty hard to come by that is raised..

Thanksgiving 2013 – Roasted Aioli Turkey, Braised Pork Belly, Tomahawk Steak, Cranberries, Scallion Biscuits & Many More

The meats of the night: Roasted aioli turkey, Grilled Pat LaFrieda tomahawk ribeye steak, braised pork belly (东坡肉) Thanksgiving in my family always mean to go big or don’t bother trying to cook. I mean, it’s the holidays so there’s no need to heed to our waistlines and calories and just enjoy the food. My brother wanted a roasted turkey so I remembered reading from Thomas Keller’s mayonnaise turkey several years ago and thought this might be a good time to experiment this idea. I dry-brine the turkey first and made my own mayonnaise. It’s made with egg yolks, Dijon..

Pork Dai Bao (“Big Bun” 大包)

I had the rare cravings for dai bao or what’s literally translated as “big bun” (大包) from Cantonese but originated from Guangdong. These huge steamed buns that’s about the size of a medium grapefruit is densely stuffed with a mixture of pork, a hard boiled egg, Chinese sausage, and mushrooms. The bread itself is more of a sweeter, cake-y, fluffy kind of texture. The issue is the old school Chinese bakeries in NYC’s Chinatown sadly doesn’t make it as good as it used to be and not many places make it either. Since I know how to make dumplings and..

Wilderness Poets’ raw nuts and nut butters; President’s Imported Cultured Butters and Cheeses; My copy of Momofuku Milk Bar cookbook; Homemade pistachio lemon cake, Momofuku Milk Bar’s recipe This weekend was my birthday and for those of you who read this site often enough, my annual tradition is to bake my own birthday cake. OXO & Plated Very Vegetarian Recipe Challenge – Apple Fennel Carrot Salad

OXO Good Grips Vegetarian tools and some of the tools used for salad OXO and Plated chose me as one of the few bloggers for this “very vegetarian recipe challenge.” I honestly thought it’s great time for me to go on a relative vegetable cleanse for my diet since I attended and ate at many food events (just look back a few posts or my Twitter and you’ll see what I mean). Since autumn is here, believe it or not, that means apples are at its peak and root vegetables like fennel and carrots are becoming abundant, those were my..

OMilk NYC – Delicious Nut Milks & Almond Milk Chia Seed Pudding Recipe

O Milk is an all natural, Brooklyn-based nut milk company that creates really delicious nut milks started and run by a husband and wife, Greg and Julie Van Ullen. I took a liking for nut milks when I did try juice cleansing earlier this year. As it’s creamy, rich and a slightly sweet. Also, I’ve been drinking homemade soy milk my entire life (my parents know how to make it and they used to make it at least once a month) and it’s not far off from the richer nut milks. As a woman who adores her dairy, OMilk does..

Taiwanese-Style Mooncakes and Taro Root Paste Recipes

Traditional mooncakes (before and after baking) Mid-Autumn Festival is coming up soon (this year, it’s September 19th) and it seriously felt maybe a week or two ago I made these traditional Chinese pastries – the traditional mooncakes (廣式月餅) and the snowskin mooncakes. I’ve been making these ever since for my family and a few close friends and they always wanted a few of these pastries once they start seeing it at the Chinese grocery stores and bakeries. Taiwanese flaky mooncakes This year, I did not make any snowskin mooncakes and made traditional mooncakes (what you see at the beginning of..
