SuperPier – Venue of 2013′s StarChefs’ ICC This year’s StarChefs took place at the SuperPier (last year). The venue has a lot of character like large steel shipping containers suspended in mid-air and exposed brick walls. This year’s theme “Guts & Gory” seems to fit this venue – rustic, unfinished space to have a sophisticated industry four-day event – that’s if you include their public kickoff event, Smoke@ICC. (This was my third year attending this amazing event. You may read through my experiences for 2012 and 2011.) Gorgeous day to have a BBQ; Various plates at StarChefs’ Smoke@ICC Smoke@ICC was..
Setting outside the classroom; Kitchen demo area; Table setting at the Men’s Health Cooking School This past Saturday, I attended the Men’s Health Cooking School at Institute of Culinary Education in the hopes of picking up a few tips from most of these classes and to meet Chef/Owner Andy Ricker of Pok Pok in person. These cooking classes are actually cooking demonstrations rather than the cooking classes where you would get your hands dirty touching and chopping the ingredients. Nevertheless, you will have fun since the chefs who were cooking for us are very cool people and beyond just a..
Communal dining at Hotel Americano; passing out Maury – La Coume du Roy 2007; Executive Chef Joseph Buenconsejo and Sous Chef Tony Venegas Sud de France Festival kicked off (prior to its Launch Party on Monday, June 3rd) their Festival with the “Tasting Tables” series with Chef Joseoh Buenoconsejo and Sous Chef Tony Venegas at Hôtel Americano in Chelsea. This particular dinner was set outside on the hotel restaurant’s patio during this humid, very warm Sunday evening in communal tables set in blue and white check tablecloths and a live band playing convivial swing music. It almost felt like I..
Exterior, Interior & Drinks Pounds & Ounces is located in Chelsea. This bar and restaurant looks like an Art Deco-inspired bar that looks quite handsome, especially when night sets in. The dining area is dark wood with an interesting boxing mural and dotted with two lounge tables with plush leather chairs. While we’re perusing the menu, my friend had the potent yet fruity Chelsea Breeze ($14) and I had a good Casa Lapostolle Cabernet Sauvignon ($10) that has cherry notes and tobacco nose with medium tannins that could stand up to a burger.
Friedman’s Lunch signage; Interior; Cappuccino and Latte Friedman’s Lunch is one of the few casual, sit-down restaurants in Chelsea Market. I’ve passed this restaurant myriad of times over the years and always remembered seeing it being bustling during the afternoon hours. I finally went there for brunch as my friend and I wanted to do eat somewhere different. Entering this narrow restaurant, packed to the gills of diners, it’s a homey kind of place with industrial touches from the exposed brick and metal pipes. We were fortunate to have a table available without much waiting, even though a crowd built..
I recently ate at Mihoko 21 Grams last week for an event. Exterior, interior, one of the tables, shelf of top-shelf liquor, the beautiful crowd This restaurant is founded by a former Japanese ballerina, Mihoko. She collected most of the items from her travels and used them to decorate and/or be sold at this restaurant such as these rare, utilitarian teapots I photograped. The dining room space is gorgeous, it feels and looks like I’m eating at a Baroque dining room. It’s opulent but it’s not overdone. The name of this restaurant is refers to the purported weight of a..
At Bar Basque, Murgo 2007 Brut Rosé for VIP reception, and the lavish table display at Bar Basque This year’s StarChefs Rising Stars Gala 2011 took place at Bar Basque. (If you do recall, last year was at Maritime Parc in Liberty State, New Jersey.) Much closer to home and it’s a really nice sheltered outdoor space to be at that beautiful evening. The honored chefs, mixologists and sommeliers came out this evening to cook their best dish and for a few, pair the food with great cocktails, wines and sakes. This Year’s Rising Stars If you’re inquiring who are..
Trestle on Tenth: Exterior and Interior, The Metzgete on the menu For the past few years, I’ve heard of Trestle on Tenth and placed it on my (long) list of places I want/should eat in New York City. Finally, I made a dinner date with my mom this past Thursday because of the Metzgete that runs every night through this Saturday, January 22, 2011. The Metzgete is basically a meat-centric platter (can be done either family-style or individually) that costs $26 per person. I’ll get in depth with this later and yes, my mother and I love to eat meat…
Waaay back on Friday, January 9th, I’ve invited a whole bunch of friends: K, Doug, Helen, Kim, Julie, and Giulia for dinner at Co. Most of us who are familiar with Jim Lahey’s Sullivan Street Bakery are fans of his bread and wouldn’t pass up the chance of trying out his wonderful pizza. Hell, the biggest temptation was Adam Kuban’s multiple posts about Co. made us all weak in the knees and tortured us with the glorious food photos when he previewed and ate during the soft opening run. Co’s exterior and interior Expecting a somewhat of a long wait,..
