New York Taste 2017

Mezcal cocktail from Pegu Club Arancini filled with beef short rib and Chinese Tuxedo's "strange flavor" tuna

New York magazine’s annual signature event New York Taste is always a fun and delicious event that closes out the year with the large NYC food events. This event featured more than forty of the city’s most celebrated chefs, mixologists, and rising stars. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to City Harvest to help fight hunger in New York City.

Some of the chefs/bartenders and their restaurants that attended that evening were Neal Harden of abcV, Jessi Singh of Babu Ji, Zachary Golper of Bien Cuit, Kenta Goto of Bar Goto, Daniel Alvarez of Daily Provisions, Miroslav Uskokovic of Gramercy Tavern, Greg Baxtrom of Olmsted), Dale Talde of Rice & Gold and many others were there.

Bar Goto's Gin Margarita, Shiso, Cucumber & Chili cocktail and Suzuki housemade sesame tofu, monkfish liver and bekko soy sauce

A few of the highlights from this year’s event were the cocktails offered from Bar Goto and Pegu Club. The Lower East Side cocktail from Goto made of gin margarita, shiso, cucumber and chili was very refreshing and I adore the heat that lingered in the back of my tongue after the end of each sip. The beautiful, floral and smoky mezcal cocktail from Pegu Club was great too.

In regards to the actual food, I really liked Suzuki‘s housemade sesame tofu, monkfish liver and bekko soy sauce that had the lovely dish that was savory with a delicate touch of sweet from the tofu and monkfish liver and spicy from the chili infused bekko soy sauce. The arancini, a fried risotto rice ball, stuffed with braised short ribs is a satisfying and hefty bite (great to go with drinks).

Passion fruit parfait from Gotham Bar & Grill
Chocolate Bourbon Pecan tarts from Gramercy Tavern

There were many desserts that I adored from the various restaurants who attended the event. I’m always a fan of chef Miro of Gramercy Tavern’s chocolate bourbon pecan tartlettes. It’s the platonic ideal of what that said tart should be – perfectly crisp and buttery tart base with a deeply chocolate-y and nutty filling without being too sweet. Chef Ron Paprocki of Gotham Bar & Grill served up elegant glasses of passion fruit parfaits that was vibrant, tart and sublime as the fruit.

Overall, it’s a great event to eat until your stomach can’t take it any more. It has so much variety in regards to cuisine and the drinks were top notch.
