Great German Fare at Wendell’s Bakery & Bistro (Taipei, Taiwan)

Fresh baked rolls, German Erdinger beer and Lime Soda
Honey fig salad, baked salmon, fig, asparagus, cherry tomato, zucchini, beetroot, cherry radish, seasonal greens and balsamic vinegar

Wendel’s Bakery & Bistro has four locations with Tianmu has an outside beer garden. The location in Da’an and Neihu offer just as much selection as the Tianmu, but the menu selection differs a little and they have way more pizza options than the Tianmu location.

They offer authentic German bread in their bakery and deli, and also have some other take home items such as cheese, homemade jam, cake, and dessert. The bistro section of Wendel’s serves the best Taipei German food that I have found so far. Everyone else I know, Germans included, also agree that it’s the best that is available in Taipei. Wendel’s is a third generational German Bakery and the current generational line, Michael Wendel, has added the delicious bistro section to the bakery.

We had started off with their beautiful housemade rolls and wonderful light Pilsner beer Erdinger beer and a refreshing lime soda. Shortly, the platter of honey fig salad with cubes of salmon, locally grown figs, asparagus, cherry tomato, zucchini, beetroot, cherry radish, seasonal greens and balsamic vinegar. The salad was very tasty and it feels healthy and substantial enough if I were to eat this solo.

Sausage platter - Thuringer sausage, Cheese sausage, Frankfurter sausage, Polish sausage, served with sauerkraut and creamy mashed potato

For something more heartier and meat oriented, we had the sausage platter containing four different sausages – Thuringer sausage, Cheese sausage, Frankfurter sausage, Polish sausage – served with sauerkraut and creamy mashed potato. The sausages were incredible. Juicy, flavorful, balanced and had a nice snap from the natural casing. The sides were excellently prepared as well.

Haxen - Oven roasted german style pork knuckle served with sauerkraut, and creamy mashed potato

The star of this meal wsa the haxen, a large, oven roasted German style pork knuckle served with saurkraut. This golden, crisp skinned pork knuckle was glorious with the moist tender meat. The classic side of saurkraut is perfect tangy contrast the meat.
