Ice Cream Outings with Gordon: Stogo & Big Gay Ice Cream Truck

Waayy back on August 26th (yeah, I know I’m absurdly behind), I met up with Gordon, for a potential outing to eat one of Big Gay Ice Cream Truck‘s creations. Problem for that particular date, if you follow BGICT’s Twitter, he didn’t make it to Union Square within my lunch hour because of mechanical issues with his truck.

A bit disappointed, I resorted to think of somewhere else to have ice cream that none of us (as in me, Gordon, and my friend Giulia) had and it’s close to Union Square, I thought of Stogo. Frankly, I’m not a fan of vegan ice cream. It sounds like an oxymoron – ice cream that doesn’t contain dairy. But I thought, “what the heck, try it once and move on if it doesn’t work out.”

By the time we walked over to Stogo, I’m at a loss as to what to get. Frankly, I’m hesitant to get anything just because I wouldn’t call this ice cream since it lacks dairy and without dairy, it doesn’t have that wonderful creaminess that I love in ice cream.

Gordon chose the creamsicle. It’s nicely balanced with the orange and cream flavors. It tastes quite healthy after sampling a little spoon – and admittedly, a bit icy.

After a few samplings of different flavors, I finally chose the coconut vanilla ice cream (the one on the right). It’s coconutty and vanilla but still, I want my rich dairy texture. Giulia almost always leans for sorbets whenever she goes to an ice cream shop or gelateria, so her mango sorbet was fine.

After my slight disappointment and my weird desire to try one of BGICT’s unusual toppings, Gordon and I met up a week later and finally been bestowed with Doug Quint’s greatness!

Reading his tweet for that day, he debuted the Thanksgiving Sundae Special. How can you go wrong with vanilla soft serve, pumpkin butter, graham crackers, topped with a cloud of whipped cream? Sounds divine to me.

This lovely creation was worth the $6. It tasted like pumpkin pie in ice cream form. Cold and creamy, the pumpkin butter was nicely balanced with nutmeg and cinnamon, and the crushed graham crackers gave some crunchy texture. I would eat this on Thanksgiving and pass the actual pie. It is insanely good.

Gordon concocted a vanilla soft serve dusted with curry powder with a nutella-schmeared chocolate cookie on the side. The sweet curry flavor was nice but it’s missing a coherent element to make this sundae work. (I didn’t try the cookie.)

With summer technically over and I have to prepare myself to bid BGICT farewell very soon (he’s closing up shop early October), I need to get my lazy butt down to Union Square and have one more of Mr. Quint’s offbeat soft serve combination, especially his renowned choinkwich. I must get my hands on that ice cream sandwich!
